Balinese Wayang Kulit Gamelan Musicians & Puppetry
Gusti Sudarta will direct an evening of traditional Balinese Wayang Kulit accompanied by a small ensemble of leading American and Balinese gamelan musicians. In Balinese temple ceremonies, episodes from the Hindu Mahabharata epic are recounted by a shadow master (dalang) who manipulates a cast of up to fifty intricately carved leather puppets held against a semi-transparent screen. A single dalang provides the voices for each of the characters, speaking in several liturgical and colloquial languages, and entertains and educates audiences through a combination of virtuosic fight scenes, delicate dances, philosophical exegesis and bawdy humor.

Zydeco is a current name for this electrified mix of Creole, blues, Cajun and country. Tom Turino (accordions, fiddle, guitar) has been learning, composing, and playing this style for the last ten years in local festival and club performances. Ben Smith (fiddle), Ben Hay (guitar), J.B.
