Audition Requirements -- Brass (Graduate)

Euphonium

Prospective students should prepare three selections, including one sonata, one concerto, and one unaccompanied composition. Applicants should select repertory from at least two musical periods.

French Horn

M.M. applicants should prepare one complete solo work, which may include: Beethoven (Sonata), Mozart (concerti), R. Strauss (concerti), Hindemith (sonatas or Concerto), Dukas (Villanelle), Heiden (Sonata), Schumann (Adagio & Allegro), or a comparable solo of the applicant's choice. In addition, applicants should prepare six orchestral excerpts from the standard repertory, including: Brahms (Symphony No. 3, third movement - first horn), Shostakovitch (Symphony No. 5, low tutti passage - first movement, figure 17-21), Mahler (Symphony No. 5, Scherzo, bars 563-579 and 699-744, obligato first horn), R. Strauss (Till Eulenspiegel, opening calls), Tchaikovsky (Symphony No. 5, second movement, solo), and one excerpt of candidate's choice.

Sight reading may be required for all graduate applicants.

All D.M.A. applicants should prepare two works from different periods of contrasting style, which may include: Michael Haydn (Concerto), Foerster (concerti), Joseph Haydn (concerti), W.A. Mozart (Concerto No. 2 or Concerto No. 4), Weber (Concertino), Schumann (Adagio & Allegro), R. Strauss (Concerto No. 2), Gliere (Concerto), Schoeck (Concerto), Wilder (sonatas), Jacobs (Concerto), or a comparable solo of the applicant's choice. In addition, applicants should prepare six orchestral excerpts from the standard repertory, including: Beethoven (Symphony No. 7, first movement, Vivace section before C and last 19 bars of that movement), Brahms (Symphony No. 2, first horn, first movement: 8th bar after M until 31 after M, first horn solo), Shostakovitch (Symphony No. 5, low tutti passage - first movement, figure 17-21), Mahler (Symphony No. 5, Scherzo, bars 563-579 and 699-744, obligato first horn), R. Strauss (Ein Heldenleben, opening call, first horn), R. Strauss (Don Quixote, Variation #7, fourth horn), Wagner (Short Call), and one excerpt of the candidate's choice. Applicants will also be given limited diagnostic of pitch matching and rythmic recall.

Trombone

GRADUATE TENOR or BASS TROMBONE AUDITIONS All applicants for the admittance to the M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in trombone or bass trombone must perform:

1. Two or three solo works from the repertoire listed below.
2. All Orchestral excerpts from lists below.
3. Sightreading.

M.M. in Tenor Trombone.

1. Select 2 works (minimum) from the following list: Bozza - Ballade, Ewazen - Sonata, Grondahl - Concerto, Sulek- Sonata "Vox Gabrieli".
2. Optional alto trombone work(s) of your choice.
3. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Ravel - Bolero, Mahler - Symphony No. 3, Mozart - Requiem, Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries, Rossini - William Tell Overture

D.M.A. in Tenor Trombone.

1. Select 2 works (minimum) from the following list: DeFaye - Deux Danses, Ewazen - Sonata, Martin - Ballade, Tomasi - Concerto.
2. Optional alto trombone work(s) of your choice.
3. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Ravel - Bolero, Mahler - Symphony No. 3, Mozart - Requiem, Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries, Rossini - William Tell Overture, Schumann - Symphony 3 "Rhenish".

M.M. in Bass Trombone.

1. Select 2 works (minimum) from the following list: Brahms - Four Serious Songs, DeFaye/Knaub - Deux Danses, Hindemith - Tuba Sonata, Ritter-George - Concerto.
2. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Franck - Symphony in d minor, Haydn - Creation, Kodaly - Hary Janos, Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries.

D.M.A. in Bass Trombone.

1. Select 2 works (minimum) from the following list: Ewazen - Concertino, Ritter-George - Concerto, Stevens - Tuba Sonata, White - Tetra Ergon, Williams - Tuba Concerto.
2. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Franck - Symphony in d minor, Haydn - Creation, Kodaly - Hary Janos, Rossini - William Tell Overture, Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries.

Trumpet

Prospective M.M. and D.M.A. students should prepare a minimum of three compositions for the audition, including repertory that demonstrates diversity of styles, time periods, and forms (sonatas, concerti, orchestral excerpts, and studies are all acceptable). Sight reading may be required for all graduate applicants.

Tuba

Prospective students should prepare three selections, including one sonata, one concerto, and one unaccompanied composition. Applicants should select repertory from at least two musical periods.
