Brass (Undergraduate)
Euphonium
The candidate should demonstrate good embouchure resulting in comfortable playing in all registers, a good concept of sound, a strong sense of rhythm, and a steady tempo. The student will be asked to perform:
- A solo, movements from a sonata or concerto, or etudes, demonstrating lyrical phrasing and technical proficiency.
- Sight reading.
French Horn
Please prepare an audition performance of music that is not too difficult for you to play, ideally of music you enjoy playing.
- Two contrasting solos or études of your choice (examples: Mozart Concerti No. 2 or No. 4 plus a Strauss concerto)
- Sight reading.
- Be prepared to play any major scale — two octaves minimum.
- Performance Applicants Only: Three standard orchestral excerpts of your choice.
Trombone
The candidate should demonstrate good embouchure resulting in comfortable playing in all registers, a good concept of sound, a strong sense of rhythm, and a steady tempo.
- Be prepared to perform two contrasting movements from the list of works cited below, demonstrating lyrical phrasing and technical proficiency. Please contact Professor Chasanov at echasano@illinois.edu or 217.333.6674 should you wish to substitute works not cited. For tenor trombone — David: Concertino; Hindemith: Sonate; Larsson: Concertino; Serocki: Sonatine. For bass trombone — Defaye/Knaub: Deux Danses; Hindemith: Drei Leichte Stucke; Jacob: Cameos; McCarty: Sonata.
- Sight reading.

- Applicants for the Performance Degree in trombone and bass trombone are also required to prepare 3 orchestral excerpts from the lists located at the UI Trombone Website.
Trumpet
The candidate should demonstrate good embouchure resulting in comfortable playing in all registers, a good concept of sound, a strong sense of rhythm, and a steady tempo. The student will be asked to perform:
- First movement of one of the following:
Haydn Concerto in E Flat
Hummel Concerto in E Flat - Charlier: Étude Transcendantes # 2 or #4 or #6
- Scales and Arpeggios
- Sight reading.
Tuba
The candidate should demonstrate good embouchure resulting in comfortable playing in all registers, a good concept of sound, a strong sense of rhythm, and a steady tempo. The student will be asked to perform:
- A solo, movements from a sonata or concerto, or etudes, demonstrating lyrical phrasing and technical proficiency.
- Sight reading.
