Isabel K. Wong

Assistant Professor of Musicology, Emerita

B.A., University of Melbourne, Australia; M.A., Northwestern University; doctoral study at Brown University. 

Isabel Wong has focused her research on Chinese musical theaters, particularly the Kunqu theater, and on the intellectual history of modern Chinese music. She has given presentations in numerous national and international conferences, and has contributed widely to books, journals, and encyclopedias. She was the recipient of a senior research grant from the Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China (CSCPRC). She is one of the co-authors of Excursions in World Music. In addition to teaching classes on the music of China, and that of Japan and Korea, Isabel Wong also serves as the Director of the Office of Institutional and Faculty International Collaboration. Together with her colleagues Thomas Turino and Charles Capwell, she was part of the team that successfully obtained a three-year grant (1999-2000) from the Ford Foundation under its "Crossing Borders" initiative, and she also serves as the chief administrator of this project. For the academic year 2002-03, Professor Wong is responsible for designing and administering a campus-wide "Interim Crossing Borders" program.
